The Road Management Ireland Division of The CHM Group was recently established to supplement our current services and make sure clients have access to a full range of solutions. Maximizing safety with minimizing interruption is our aim. We are available 24 hours a day and serve all of Ireland’s counties. We provide our customers with a variety of traffic management services, from surveying to planning, installing, maintaining, and dismantling temporary traffic management systems on their behalf. As part of our service, we can also arrange for the provision of traffic control tools including vehicle-activated traffic lights, variable message signs, traffic cones, etc. along with qualified employees.
Traffic management is classified in a number of different ways. Firstly, it is important to know which of the following groups the works come under?
- Static operations
- Mobile operations
There are three main types of static works which are assigned letters.
- Type A – are works that are on the road for 12 hours or longer
- Type B – are works that are on the road for longer than 15 minutes but less than 12 hours
- Type C – are short duration up to a maximum of 15 minutes.
There are two main types of mobile works defined as follows:
- Semi-static operations (SSO) found on Level 1 & 2 Roads
- Mobile Lane Closures (MLC) found on Level 3 Roads
Why are these important?
Traffic management supplies – By classifying the works in the categories above it is possible to calculate the safety requirements needed to protect road users and road workers when traffic management systems are in operation. The safety parameters are all contained in a piece of legislation called the Traffic Signs Manual (2019).
As motorists, we would only know what we encounter and the most common types of traffic management on Irish roads are:
- Give & Take
- Stop & Go
- Temporary Traffic Signals
Give & Take
Is a single file shuttle system only found on Level 1 single carriageway roads where the speed limit is 50 km/h or less?
On approach, you will see a Road Narrows sign and in this circumstance, no one has right of way and drivers only go past the works if it is safe to do so.
Is a single file shuttle system found on Level 1 & 2 single carriageway roads where the speed limit is 80 km/h or less
On approach, you will see a Yield sign on the side of the road where the works are located, and in this circumstance, you must yield to traffic from the opposite direction which have right of way.
This is a shuttle system controlled by a person operating a Stop/Go Board. The Stop/Go board is a legal signal and must be obeyed.
Temporary Traffic Signals
This is a shuttle system controlled by a set of temporary traffic lights. These temporary signals have the same legal standing as the permanent versions and must be obeyed.
This is a shuttle system controlled by a convoy vehicle. The convoy vehicle will drive through the works at 20 km/h which is a safe speed to protect the workers in that location. You must not overtake the convoy vehicle or drive through the works at speeds in excess of 20 km/h.
